Namecheap VPS Hosting

May 5, 2009 – 10:37 am

I recently had the experience of signing up for and trying Namecheap VPS Hosting. So far everything has been very positive. I chose CentOS for my Linux Distribution and went to work setting up PHP, MySQL, and Apache. I used “yum install” for the setup and went to work. I can report no problems with setup.

So far I haven’t put much of a load on the server, but it looks like it’s managing to due the job. The package I chose was for $29.99 and included 30GB of hard drive space and 512mb RAM. For what I plan on hosting there, it should be more the sufficient.

NameCheap has proven reliable

I’ve used NameCheap for the last few years for domain registration and have always been pleased with their service. I can only remember one outage of DNS (due to a DDOS attack), but they communicated what the problem was and fixed it in a reasonable amount of time. Whatever measures they took that day against the attack worked, because I have seen any issues since. For a low cost registrar, they seem very into customer service and their servers work fast. Plus I like their DNS control panel better than any other I’ve tested.

If you’re looking for an affordable hosting solution with power and configurability, a VPS might be the way to go.

One thing is certain though. VPS doesn’t appear to be able to handle the strain of a large production website. At least this is true on the smaller offerings. If you plan on going with VPS for a website with heavy traffic, either go with a fully dedicated server, or go with a souped-up configuration. After that, it’s simply a matter of how much you tweak the performance.

Best Webhost Linux VPS

April 15, 2009 – 4:31 pm

It’s easy to understand why you’d like to use Linux for your VPS. Linux servers are really coming into their own, and it’s likely as a system administrator that you’re already familiar with server maintenance on a Linux server and you’d like to stick with what you know.

Plus, there’s cost. Linux servers loaded with open source software applications can easily exceed the performance of proprietary operating systems, at a fraction of the cost.

The best webhost of Linux VPS is the one who is an expert

Linux based Virtual Private Servers come in most “flavors” of Linux. There are solutions for everything from Red Hat and Debian through Slackware or Ubuntu. As usual, it will depend on what you’re looking for to find just the right provider. Web host providers that handle many different versions of Linux Virtual Private Servers might not have mastery of any. You know the old phrase, “Jack of all trades, master of none?” That could hold true for Linux web hosting. The best webhost for Linux VPS is the one who really knows the field. Once your server is deployed and in production, it is no longer the time for experimentation.

One thing is certain, Linux VPS solutions might be right for you. They operate on robust software, and they tend to be very affordable. If you manage a number of low volume domains, this solution is certainly cheaper than a dedicated server and much more robust than shared hosting. In fact, since you usually have unlimited domains with your VPS, you might be able to significantly reduce your hosting costs by switching to Linux VPS.

What to look for when choosing the Best Linux VPS Web Host:

1) Stable company
2) Expertise in the Linux distro you plan on using.
3) Affordable cost
4) Tech support (for when real trouble happens)

If you can find a company that handles all of these functions well, you probably just found your next VPS Linux host.

VPS Hosting Versus Dedicated Server Hosting

April 6, 2009 – 2:28 pm

There comes a time in a webmaster’s life where they’ll have to decide between VPS Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting. As usual, the proper decision will be based mainly on needs.

If you have a website that gets a lot of traffic, then nothing can beat hosting it on a dedicated server. The reason is, resources are not shared with other sites. All of the server’s process are “dedicated” to doing just one job for one site. VPS hosting doesn’t offer the same type of dedication. But it is cheaper. Therefore, if you need many of the features of a dedicated server, but don’t have immense amounts of traffic and you want to save cash, VPS hosting will likely beat dedicated for your needs.

Despite the lower cost, VPS hosting is generally adequate for most webmaster’s needs. Although the resources aren’t dedicated in the same sense Dedicated server hosting is, it’s an unlikely event that what one customer on the same server can do to affect you. A number of low traffic websites being hosted on one VPS hosting setup should run into no snags at all. If the traffic goes up, there may be a performance hit, although most VPS hosts claim there won’t be.

For webmasters of growing sites, VPS hosting should be enough. It offers many advantages over shared hosting, and will not cost nearly as much as dedicate server hosting.

For VPS hosting or dedicated server hosting it’s generally expected that the webmaster will handle their own server administration. If support is needed, you’ll have to check upfront and make sure it’s offered. Otherwise, you’ll be on your own when it comes to managing your own box.

Web Host Services

January 6, 2009 – 6:27 pm

When you decide to put a website, one of the first decisions you’ll have to make is what web host service provider will host your site.

There are a number of things to consider before deciding which web hosting provider to choose. Major things you should concern yourself with is whether or not you’re dealing with a reliable web host. Reliable webhosting services typically have very little downtime, and in the case of network outages respond quickly to the matter and fix it it in a timely manner. Technical support services should be easy to contact and work with, in the event that you need assistance.

Knowing what kind of website you’re going to publish is also helpful. If you talk to web hosting sales representative, they’re likely to ask if you’re putting up an E-Commerce website that needs shopping cart software or an SSL (Secured Socket Layer) for protected access, if you need Email services such as Email forwarding or mailing list capabilities. If you have an idea of the products and services you require, sales representatives will have a better time deciding what web hosting package is right for you or customizing your host package.

There are a myriad of web hosting services available if you look hard enough. You might be able to find out more about affordable webhosts, business webhosts or FTP and C-Panel webhosts by browsing a web hosting directory. These directories offer the convenience of having many web host providers listed in one location.
Many times they provide links to web hosting review websites that offer opinions and experiences with web hosting services, so you can read what others have experienced before you sign up with a provider.

Taking an extra ten minutes to research a company is almost always worth it. Having a webhost that experiences a lot of down-time or that isn’t there when you need them can be frustrating and cost you both time and money. Saving yourself this time and hassle by learning more about the webhost beforehand will save you both time and trouble in the end.

Wordpress Hosting Sites

January 3, 2009 – 1:22 pm

Wordpress hosting is a growing category these days as more and more bloggers choose WordPress for their software needs. The first question bloggers need to answer is whether they’ll put their website on the Wordpress.com domain and let them host it, or whether they’ll search for independent web hosting themselves. For those who use a dedicated server, chances are they’ll continue to self-host. But for most others, they’ll likely look for a hosting company that specializes in WordPress.

Choosing a Wordpress web hosting solution

If you decide to host your Wordpress installation with a Wordpress web hosting company, the key is making sure they’re experts at the job. Wordpress is not a particularly hard CMS to host, but it does require constant, automated updates. Make sure your hosting company stays up to date with the newest versions of all installed software, especially Wordpress. Wordpress tends to do frequent updates, so make sure your host is committed to always updating your website to the newest version.

Since Wordpress updates often, there’s also the matter of security. Some of the patches done for WP are because of security leaks. You’re always better off dealing with experts in online security because the number of threats are growing daily both in scope, and complexity.

When looking for a Wordpress web host, use the same common checklist you would for any hosting company.

  1. How well established are they?
  2. Do they offer good customer support?
  3. Is the service affordable?
  4. Do they specialize in my needs?
  5. Is the company stable?

Don’t be afraid to ask these questions before you sign up. Once you’ve already decided it might be a bit late to find out the company doesn’t meet your requirements. You should have no problem finding a competent Wordpress host.

Budget Web Hosting Doesn’t Always Mean Poor Quality Service

December 29, 2008 – 3:47 pm

Cheap is not the same as bad in all cases

If you’re planning to start a website then you must also be pondering the question of where you can find a reliable budget web hosting service. It may be very difficult to find anything of high quality when a low budget is your main concern. However, if you shop carefully, you can always find great deals on web hosting. After all, web hosting is one of the most competitive industries around and there are always deals to be found when providers compete on price.

Web hosting companies have mushroomed throughout the years. There are very big companies hosting thousands of websites at the same time there are small internet firms operating from a home office. So how do you find the best budget web hosting in the very competitive market that exists today?

Research is the key to finding the best web hosting deals

Research web hosting sites for awhile and you’ll notice common traits in the web hosting packages being offered by many companies. The major emphasis of their marketing is on cost and bandwidth. These two features make the whole deal seem like something magical to a webmaster looking for budget web hosting.

The rule of thumb when looking for cheap but quality web hosting is don’t believe in too good to be true offers. Following this same logic, any company may not be able to provide excellent quality service if the price of the service is virtually free. Think like a business person and use the following reminders as guide when choosing your budget web hosting:

Reputation – This is very important when looking for quality service. Offering cheap services doesn’t mean poor quality. Good companies aim to satisfy their clients no matter how inexpensive their services are.

Storage and Features – Imagine how your website operates and how much space will your files demand. This is very important when choosing the kind of package that you need for your web hosting.

Services – Budget web hosting companies may also offer extra services like domain name registration. Just be sure that your domain name will not be registered under their company since you’ll be losing the rights for the domain name in that case.

Traffic – How many people do you think will access your web site? If it’ll be really busy then you may have to opt for higher bandwidth plans.
